A Course Years in the Making

May 21, 2024

I began tuning pianos for supplemental income back in 2016. Following around a mentor and trying to be like a sponge, I soaked up as much knowledge as I could. But there’s no better teacher than experience. I began offering free tunings to many acquaintances; people that hadn’t had their piano tuned in ages, and loved to get their piano sounding better. A good trade: they got their instrument sounding better than before (albeit, beginner-quality work, I think), and I got experience. I got to become accustomed to the typical issues that pianos throw at you. At the beginning, you learn a lot. There’s so much to soak in. But you continue learning as you gain experience, and I still encounter new issues frequently out in the field.

I was really fortunate that someone with over 30 years of experience was willing to let me go with him on his tuning appointments and share knowledge with me when I had questions. Not all piano techs are willing to share their knowledge so freely.

With this course, I’m aiming to share as much as I can for someone who is a beginner and interested in learning this trade. I spent almost 2 years working on this course before finally uploading any of the lessons. Months were put into writing out the modules. Then, it was months of filming. And of course, the biggest bear of them all—the editing process. I’m a perfectionist. That personal trait added many months of work, because I needed everything to be done as perfect as I knew I could get it. If you purchase the Piano Tuning 101 course, I hope the nearly 2 years of effort that I put into it helps you.
